Design of Moment Connections with Directly Welded Flanges
For beam to column flange connections by directly welding the beam flange using a full penetration weld the design is
prequalified. However, one should use this type of connections cautiously since failure of these connections under
seismic loading have been observed.
If the connection is to a column web, an extension plate shop welded to the column is used. The beam flange is butt
welded to the extension plate. The following checks are made for the connection of the extension plate to the column:
1. Extension plate tension strength
2. Extension plate buckling
3. Extension plate to support weld
4. Maximum weld size column flange can develop
5. Extension plate shear strength at plate to column flange weld
The equations used for these checks are printed in the calculation report in detail.
